Its Her Party, She Can Do What She Wants To

Once upon a time Miley Cyrus starred as the a sweet and innocent popstar, Hannah Montana. Now 21, Miley Cyrus has entered a whole other realm with her music. The singer no longer dances around in wigs singing of her alter ego, but prances around in thongs singing about partying and being wild. Recently a lot of controversy has surrounded her new tour including parents wanting her tour shut down, but Miley informed her Smilerz that there was no truth behind the rumors.

In June of 2010 Miley released, I Can’t Be Tamed. The song shocked her fans because it was a side of Miley they had never seen. The singer wore a scandalous black leotard as she strutted her way through the video. In hindsight, this was mild compared to her current  performances.

This past year Cyrus released her new album “Bangerz” and received mixed reviews. You either love her new album, or you hate it. Her concerts are wild parties with eccentric animations, dancers of all shapes and sizes, and lots of outrageous costume changes. And Miley has made it clear that she does not care if you like it or not. It's her party.

Personally, I love Miley Cyrus. I love that she’s broken out of her Hannah Montana role to be a performer that a lot of college kids can relate to. Did people really think she was going to sing to 8 year olds for the rest of her life..? Our generation grew up with Miley and we can relate to her now more than ever. However, according to George Varga, Miley still continues to draw in younger fans despite her outrageous antics (par.9).

Some parents are having a field day with her music and insisting that the Bangerz tour be shut down, because its inappropriate for young children. Here’s a thought: don’t take young children to a Miley Cyrus concert? I thought that was common sense, but you never know with our generation.

Miley's concerts are not any different than the hair bands or the heavy metal concerts in the 80s. Some concerts are just not suited for children; plain and simple. There is no need for parents to try and shut down Miley’s tour when the solution is much more simple. Don’t bring kids to her concert. Its Miley’s party and she can do what she wants to. Despite what critics say, April Sperry believes,"that doesn't mean Miley's going to stop twerking anytime soon" (par.10). This being said, Cyrus fans can rest easy. The party won't stop!

  1. Madi,
I agree with you completely here. I think a lot of people are trashing her for her choices, but she actually is providing an excellent example of being yourself even when others don’t approve, and that’s a lesson I don’t think people would disagree with, if they could step back and see her in that light. I also agree that we have grown up with her and that she is more relatable to an audience our age, not 8 year olds. After all, Miley isn’t a parent; other children aren’t necessarily her responsibility.
Your strongest rhetorical strategy was pathos; almost every sentence in your blog had this! There were a lot of words that held both positive and negative connotations that really emphasized your point and made it clear what you and critics believe. I also believe you used deductive reasoning appropriately, beginning with the large claim that “Miley Cyrus has entered a whole other realm with her music” (par 1. )and continuing to expand and specifically address how she changed her image and what it means for her fans.
My advice to you would be to provide more information on “Recently a lot of controversy has surrounded her new tour including parents wanting her tour shut down, but Miley informed her Smilerz that there was no truth behind the rumors.” (par 1.) You didn’t specifically state what the rumors were.
I think you picked a great issue to discuss, and I think that it is very relevant to our generation! Thank you for sharing!

  2. Madi,
You provide some great points about how Miley has really stepped up in this world and kept her personality the whole way to the top. Although you provide a great point of view that it is her party and she can do what she wants, there are liabilities that come with having a party. I think it is okay to view Miley as an independent woman that can express herself as she will; furthermore, you are right that it is also peoples choice to listen to her music.
I think the best rhetorical strategy you use is your ethos, which comes from the credibility from you respecting her work and talent. It lets me know that you know what your talking about and you have known who Miley is for a while.
I enjoyed your photos too. They helped with your rhetorical purpose in that they opened up the emotional side of the reader, giving them imagery to put with your words. They really helped emphasize your point, but did not seem to biased.
Overall you completed your persuasive purpose to let people know it is okay to express yourself because of the freedom we live in, but I would encourage that you include a bit of writing for people that believe in a more responsible expression of personality. You did a great job!
